The Defining Ten is where an artist/creative is invited to take us on a musical dot to dot journey of the tracks which have led them to who they are today. These could be the first song they have a memory of, first purchase, first song they learnt to play, the track which opened doors, the track which closed doors, a track which inspired and lead to a new musical direction – so expect a variety of tracks from themselves and other artists. These tracks will be played in turn – either from vinyl, cd or streamed – and discussed with the artist. The evening will end with a unique performance and chance to meet the artist afterwards. On Thursday 30th March we bring the biggest name in British free jazz to Worthing – Evan Parker. Evan Parker was born in Bristol in 1944 and took up the saxophone at the age of 14. Early influences included Paul Desmond, Eric Dolphy, and above all John Coltrane. After witnessing the Cecil Taylor Trio in full flood in New York in 1962 he was, as he says, “marked for life”, converted to the intensities of free jazz. Free improvised music has accounted for most of Parker’s activities over the last forty years, whether playing solo or in groups. His saxophones have been heard inside jazz big bands led by Kenny Wheeler, Chris McGregor, Barry Guy, Stan Tracey and Charlie Watts and in the chamber music of Michael Nyman, Gavin Bryars, Frederic Rzewski and others. He has also been sought out by artists on the experimental fringe of pop music such as Scott Walker, Robert Wyatt, David Sylvian, Jah Wobble, Spring Heel Jack, Squarepusher and Spiritualized. We are very excited to bring the biggest name in British free jazz to the intimate space of the Cellar Arts Club to discuss the 10 tracks which have defined him as a musician, after which the audience will be treated to a special short performance.
