R.A.W. (with guest author Justin Hopper)

R.A.W. stands for Readers And Writers and this evening is for both. Every month the writer and journalist Thomas H Green talks with a writer about both their work and about the world of writing, not just their process and creativity, but about how they make a living and survive as a writer. Books will be for sale. This month our guest is Justin Hopper, whose work explores the intersection of landscape, memory and myth. His book The Old Weird Albion looks at the South Downs through a series of poetic essays; Obsolete Spells reveals the work and life of occult landscape poet Victor B. Neuburg. His two albums on cult label Ghost Box Records (Chanctonbury Rings with SharronKraus; The Path with Belbury Poly) combine landscape writing with music. His podcast Uncanny Landscapes provides a forum for in-depth interviews with contemporary landscape practitioners from the arts and sciences. This evening is not just about books, but about all the places and ways we may write, from poetry pamphlets to online opportunities, from niche magazines to personal memoirs. The evening opens with readers/writers giving book recommendations, and closes with a book swap (so please, if you want to, bring a book to swap), and reader/writer chat over drinks.

Xylaroo (live)

The harmonic sweetness and perfectlyattuned songwriting of Xylaroo speaks to the fact globe-trotting duo Holly and Coco Chant are sisters. Their 2016 'Sweetooth' is one of the century's greatest but most underheard albums, an amalgam of deliciously bright songwriting, darker lyrical themes and mystical longing. Perhaps as well known for their astonishing covers of 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor' and 'I Will Survive', the last few years have seen them explore their musical range on songs such as 'Like Planes Taking Off in the Wind', 'Wild Woman', 'Psalm 23' and 'Motherfa'. For fans of Nick Mulvey, First Aid Kit and Emmy the Great. This will be a stunning evening.
