If you could speak about one subject that you are passionate about what would it be?
Every month, three guest speakers talk on a topic close to their heart. It could be on the arts, science or nature; about an abstract concept or a physical object of desire; a moment in history or perhaps a tiny fragment of their life.
Past Speakeasy’s have included talks by naturalists, in the buff (naturally!) talking about their passion for walking naked in the countryside, a man talking about his passion for cornershop newsagents and the delights they hold therein, a talk on why we should embrace failure, on what it was like living on a canal boat for 10 years, about Lego, biscuits, disused tube stations of London, lawnmowers (by a man with UKs largest collection of them!), and about teaching a town to play the ukulele.
You never know what you will get as we don’t announce the subjects ahead of the night, but we promise you will go away with food for thought!
This month we will have 3 talks that promise to entertain, enlighten and educate – sometimes all three.
Doors are at 7.30pm, with first talk at 8.15pm
NOTE: Members & non-members tickets all the same price (10% discounted drinks for members)

With influences in blues, jazz and country Ma Polaine have drawn comparisons with many, with references to Billie Holiday, Tom Waits and a “moody Mary Margaret O’Hara”, yet Ma Polaine’s sound is very much their own. Beth’s distinctive, emotive vocals coupled with her evocative lyrics create a compelling mix of abstract tales, dark humour and raw beauty, whilst Clinton’s understated guitar style supports with rich chords and gritty riffs.
Their June 2020 album “City of Love” received wide-spread acclaim and earned the band “Best band/duo” award from Fatea Magazine, with MOJO magazine saying they “have evolved a pop-folk-blues-americana style that is warmly familiar yet is sufficiently unhinged to keep you guessing”. The songs racked up airplay across the airwaves including 6 Music and Cerys Matthew’s Radio 2 Blues Show.
Playing live as a duo the songs become sparse versions of themselves, but the sound is a full one, Beth’s electric and double basses anchor the sound, with additional accordion and harmonica, leaving Clinton to play with the space in between.
MOJO Magazine – 4 stars. “Ma Polaine’s Great Decline have evolved a pop-folk-blues-americana style that is warmly familiar, yet is sufficiently unhinged to keep you guessing…”
Morning Star – 5 stars. “Packer’s voice has a superb range, but it is her interpretative skill that entrances, with the effortless shifts that imbue her evocative lyrics with rare emotional charge”.
Folk Radio UK – “..an album to be cherished, replete with enchanting musical treats around every corner”.
Blues Matters – “This is 21st-century music chock full of mystery and acute observation”.
Support from Hoverdonkey
After a number of years playing in bands more aligned with psyche and noise rock, a chance conversation revealed a shared love of accoustic folk guitar picking and Hoverdonkey was born. Taking inspiration from both older 70’s folk revival masters such as Jon Renbourne and amazing contemporary players on the current folk scene they spent 2023 writing and playing anywhere that would let them. They released their first single on Gardener’s Delight Records in June 2024 which quickly sold out.
They are currently working on an album due for release in late 2026. Hoverdonkey aim is to send listeners into a reflective state of relaxation with their music. As Gardener’s delight records put it, ‘Hoverdonkey conjure the vibe of meanderingly complex walks that always seem to end up with a superbly poured pint in a more than decent country pub’

Join us once again for our usual underground late night Cellar Session party.
For this one, we’re excited to be joined in the Techno Dungeon by one of our old mates Jake Smith, who, in addition to being a formidable DJ, has a number of releases under his belt as Subtropic on Reflective Records San Francisco & UK’s Fused & Bruised, amongst others. More recently, Jake’s been steadily releasing a string of wonky, unclassifiable tuneage on his own Bandcamp as his alter ego Jah Schmidt.. We’re really excited to be trading curveballs with Jake again after all these years.. see you on the dancefloor!

Phun City celebrate the launch of their new EP with a night of original music at The Cellar Arts Club on Saturday 30th May.
Known for their unpredictable blend of art rock, power pop and new wave, Phun City promise an evening of the unexpected — melodic hooks colliding with inventive arrangements, theatrical moments, and a healthy dose of mayhem and madness. Featuring the songwriting talents of Rupert Latimer and Paul Sullivan, the band deliver bold, original music that refuses to sit quietly in one genre.
Opening the night (or closing it, depending on which way round we feel on the day!), Beth Sarah performs with her full band, bringing an upbeat set built around her evolving “almost” theme — songs exploring near-misses, almost-love, and the tension between hope and reality. Beth Sarah also appears in the evening as vocalist with Phun City, making this a unique chance to see her in two very different musical worlds.
Expect what you wouldn’t expect. Energy, atmosphere, and a touch of beautiful chaos.
